Repurposed EV batteries could find a second life as power storage units in rural and impoverished areas.
The batteries in electric vehicles are typically deemed unsuitable when they fall below 80 percent capacity, but they can still be instrumentalvery useful in standard, home-based applications. To keep these materials in use and reduce waste, the team from the University of Warwick designed a Battery Management System that allowed them to create a working prototype that offers safe and stable performance. The battery can be easily interchanged with other modules and recharged with repurposed laptop chargers, and includes several 5V USB and 12V DC charging ports.
The project was carried out in partnership with the Innovate UK Project 2nd hEVen (2nd-Life Energy Storage Systems) and the WMG High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult.
