Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the founder of discount European airline easyJet, is ready to unveil a cut-rate mobile telephone service in Britain as soon as next week. The low-cost wireless voice and text-messaging service will be named easyMobile and it will be supported with the expertise of Danish operator TDC A/S, which will handle customer billing and network operations for easyMobile.
Mr Haji-Ioannou plans to reduce the mobile phone bills of UK consumers by as much as half by buying millions of minutes from network operators and reselling them cheaply.
Will this low-cost model work?
Well, somebody has done it before. Danish operator TDC owns Telmore which has signed up some 500,000 subscribers for telephone services at low, standardised rates in the past three years. Let’s see whether Stelios Haji-Ioannou can pull it off with his easyMobile.
