NEDERLAND — Startup Solar Greens Co. in Nederland is working on fulfilling the first 16 orders of its balcony-size greenhouses, with plans for an official launch in the fall once pre-production and external field-testing are complete.
The hope is that the My Terrace Farmer greenhouses will appeal to a variety of gardeners and would-be gardeners who might have limited outdoor space or live in a harsh climate with a short growing season like the mountains.
Designed for as little water and power usage as possible, but also ease of use for novices, the greenhouses stand 7.5 feet tall, four feet wide and 32 inches deep. The frame is made of aircraft-grade aluminum. They’re powered by batteries that can be charged either via electrical outlet or the 50-watt solar panel that sits on top. They also include LED grow lights and rain diversion systems to help minimize the need for extra watering.
The systems, designed to be assembled in one afternoon by two people, sell for $1,899 plus shipping and handling.
Ching, who runs the business out of his home in Nederland, said the greenhouses can be a great sprouting system and way for people living in the mountains to kick-start the growing season early. He said he’s also received interest from people who want to grow ornamental flowers like orchids. And, while Solar Greens isn’t marketing the greenhouses for such, he expects that the product could take off with the residential cannabis market.
