Cycling is a characteristic passion of the Netherlands, where bikes outnumber people. As of November, the country is home to the first solar bike path, SolaRoad. As sunlight hits the solar panel-paved route, energy is absorbed and added to the municipality’s supply. So far, the solar portion of the road is only 70 meters long, but it nonetheless produces enough energy to power several homes. The path itself is made of crystalline silicate solar cells that are encased in concrete and covered with a translucent layer of treated glass so that it isn’t slippery.
