Is there anything that doesn’t sound more amazing when it’s made out of titanium? You know, like ThinkGeek’s classic titanium spork. Or this crazy new squeezable water bottle.
Yes, it’s both squeezable and made of metal. The bottle isn’t 100% titanium, mind you. There’s an “elastic polymer core” sandwiched between two thin, flexible layers of metal, and an outer coating that helps Keego spring back to its original shape. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the pull cap is made of silicone and not silicon as noted in the image below.
It’s kind of a big deal, because not everyone who wants to ditch a plastic water bottle (and the accompanying taste and potential for ingesting microplastics) for a metal one wants to tilt and chug. Watch any professional athlete on TV hydrating — cyclists, joggers, boxers, football, soccer, hockey and rugby players… you name it — and you’ll probably see squeeze bottles.
Keego weighs about the same as a 24-ounce plastic squeeze bottle and it’s very durable, thanks to its titanium skin… which is also non-toxic and doesn’t impart any taste.
The team behind Keego has been working on the project for almost two years. In November, they produced their first prototype. Now they’re seeking crowdfunding for the first production run over on Kickstarter.
They’ve already blown past their goal of €25,000 — and are now well within reach of the stretch goal that would make Keego available in additional colors. Not flashy ones, mind you, but backers will be able to choose from titanium, black or white.
The €45 (about $55) price tag might seem a little steep, but it’s actually pretty close to what you’d pay for a non-squeezable titanium water bottle — and none of those are squeezable. You should feel confident making a pledge, too, since Keego is well beyond its “all-or-nothing” mark.
