Temperature Sensitive Fabric

An innovative new temperature sensitive fabric will adjust how much heat it holds based on the wearer’s body heat.

The fabric was created by a team from the University of Maryland using fibers of two different material—one that repels water and one that absorbs it. The fibers were then coated in carbon nanotubes and woven to form the fabric. When a liquid, such as sweat, contacts the fibers, they will clump together and leave gaps in the fabric. At the same time, the movement of the carbon nanotubes closer together changes the electromagnetic coupling so that the nanotubes absorb 35 percent more infrared radiation.
