TrendCentral: An LA psychiatrist and a DC therapist are trying to ease the formal doctor-patient relationship with… treadmills? With the knowledge that people are often uninhibited about their personal lives and thus very close with their personal trainers, Wayne Sandler (LA) and Jane Cibel (DC) are incorporating exercise into their sessions. Sandler has two treadmills in his office where he and some of his patients work out while he counsels them, and Cibel takes her patients through a full body workout that includes free weights and treadmills.
While we certainly aren’t knowledgeable enough in the field of psychiatry to know if these techniques are actually effective, studies have shown that exercise is an effective anti-depressant. Maybe in the future personal training will be a course requirement for aspiring shrinks.
