If you love Friendster for bringing you new friends, you would love WhoLivesNearYou as well. WhoLivesNearYou is a Singapore website which is based closely on the concept of Friendster-style online social networking, except that instead of getting to know new friends or find new dates, you can get to know your neighbours better through this hot new service.
In the WhoLivesNearYou website, users register for free with their postal codes to meet other members living in their area. They can see who lives in their block (high-rise buildings define the Singapore landscape), within a 15-minute walking radius, or anywhere in their neighbourhood. And, users can customise their personal profiles, search for other members according to interests or hobbies, or chat in a virtual forum with their neighbours.
This social networking site has become widly popular among teens in Singapore; most members are aged between 18 and 30. The current number of users stands at 50,000 and it’s still rising exponentially. Although the website is ad-free now, the owners of WhoLivesNearYou (two undergraduates aged 21) said they plan to start selling advertising space to help pay for the site.
If this concept gets replicated around the world, you would have no excuses for not interacting with your neighbours! 😉
